5 Songs to Kickstart Your Day

5 Songs to Kickstart Your Day

The Coral - In The Morning

These indie-rockers from Merseyside are known for their integration of the psychedelic folk from the 60’s and modern day indie-rock. In The Morning is the first track from their 2005 album, The Invisible Invasion. Chances are that if you were aware of the UK music scene in the mid-noughties you have heard this song as was the second most played song on UK radio in 2005. In The Morning is a catchy upbeat tune that will open your day in a bright way.

Skip Marley - Life

The son of Cedella Marley (and grandson of the great Bob Marley) really hit the scene hard in 2015: signing with the label Tuff Gong and releasing two singles. Life is similar to other songs of the Marley clan, but still holds itself strong as an independent song and Skip is doing well to make his name heard rather than the grandson of Bob. With Santana-esque guitar lines slipping in throughout the track and the great reggae style, Life is a song that is bound to get you bobbing and weaving. What better way is there to start your day than with some chill reggae to get you moving?

Foals - Mountain At My Gates

When Foals dropped this track in 2015, preceding their album What Went Down, it instantly reminded me of Frusciante-era Red Hot Chili Peppers but with considerably more intricate drums. For me, that is probably the highest praise I could give to a song. The intense feel that made Holy Fire a hit back in 2013 is prominent within Mountain At My Gates as well. With lilting guitar melodies overlapping the strong bass and insane drums, and Yannis’ unique vocals, this song is bound to wake you up and the intensity is bound to build hype for the upcoming day.

Capyac - Speedracer

This gem of nu-disco funk was released in late 2015 by newboys Capyac. Speedracer was released with the Movement Swallows Us EP. If this song fails to get you moving then there is no ounce of funk left within music nowadays. Capyac have the tried and trusted use of strong basslines, melodic guitar, and two beautiful voices in funk but also inspire a chilled-out and classic approach to nu-disco. Need to get yourself moving and up and about? Then Capyac is the answer.

Rage Against The Machine - Wake Up

Besides the name being appropriate to a list of songs to kickstart your day, Wake Up holds an energy that is rare in music. With the Kashmir-like introduction and Zach De La Rocha’s intense and flowing voice, Wake Up is likely to do exactly what the title suggests. Very few bands have managed to capture the energy that Morello, Commerford, Wilk and De La Rocha managed to put into recorded music and live shows. This energy is exactly what will get you ready for another tough day ahead; rather than chilling and getting you moving, Wake up is for those of you who need motivation to fight the challenges you face in the day.
