Fufanu - Ballerina in the Rain (Damon Albarn Remix)

As someone that is interested in the Icelandic scene, and also has an attraction to Damon Albarn’s music, the release of Albarn’s remix of Icelandic band Fufanu’s new single was met with anticipation. Ballerina in the Rain is Fufanu’s latest single. Appearing alongside the track from their 2015 album, Few More Days to Go, is Albarn’s remix of the song.
The Alternative duo, writing and recording out of Reykjavik, had previously appeared as a support artist for Blur’s Hyde Park concert and also played with Damon Albarn at the Albert Hall.

The track clearly fuses the sludgy alternative writing of Fufanu and the synth-pop style that Albarn has been associated with in later years. Kaktus Einarsson’s moody vocals draw similarities to Joy Division’s Ian Curtis in the bleakness and tone, but, as with Curtis, it works well within the music he creates. The remix lends itself well to the vocals, and Albarn’s synth work in the track is mixed with the Alt-synth fusion of the original in a unique and enticing way. The remix is a fitting change to Fufanu and will do well to advertise their new single, as well as advertising their UK tour this month.

There is an obvious element of Gorillaz’ latest album, The Fall, in this remix.
With Gorillaz reportedly releasing their first album in 6 years later in 2016, could this be a foreshadowing of what to expect? If the tracks are in a similar vein to this remix then I certainly think that their 2016 album will be enjoyable.

But given the fallout of Albarn and Hewlett and the reported lack of funding from EMI post-Plastic Beach, will Gorillaz’ music take another turn into other areas, or continue with influences from their later albums?
