Single Review: Pet Virus' 'Can I Speak To Dirt'
An offer to review this track came out of the blue. I like things that come out of the blue, like free cake for example, and upon first listen this track was like being offered a whole carrot cake with icing and everything. It just ticks so many boxes for me.
Pet Virus hail from a place in the depths of Merseyside, Huyton to be very specific.
It doesn’t strike me as a place that would spawn such an animalistic grunge noise-fest but I very well could be wrong...
The three piece describe themselves as “Scrunge” (Scouse grunge) and I can’t argue with the logic of such a description.
Their latest track, 'Can I Speak to Dirt', starts with a swinging bass groove that sounds like it could have come off a Fall LP, and then you get kicked in the guts with a whack of fuzzbox, reminiscent of 'Girl From Mars' by Ash.
"Despots on the screen again demonstrate legerdemain” what an opening line!
Political poetry that continues to show utter disdain for the 1%, sung in a style reminiscent of Dave Grohl.
I love the sketchy lead guitar lines too at the 1.55 mark, there is a wonderful loose guitar solo quality that just pierces through the mix of the track adding just one more element to this almighty beast of a track.
It’s the kind of fuzzy rock track that would be incredible in a low ceiling basement venue.
So Pet Virus if you are ever in the North East, Let me know, would love to come along to witness your art in person...
