Essential Gig Guide: February 2019 Edition (Part 2)

What a month! We’ve already had Independent Venue Week, and a bunch of excellent gigs around the region.
But the month is not yet over, and the rest of February looks like its shaping up to keep the party going nicely!

Saturday 16th February
Twiceborn / Hakara / Duchess / Ballpeen

Location: Little Buildings Newcastle
Genre: Heavy Rock / Punk / Grunge

Previously known as Bares, Twiceborn emerge as a renewed and refined band that is ready to take on the world. But first, the Newcastle four-piece are set to make their debut appearance at their spiritual home of Little Buildings. It’s fair to say we are highly intrigued to experience the evolved sound of this grungy punk outfit first hand. Adding to the hype of this show are the three bands joining Twiceborn on the night: the hooking melodic heavy rockers Hakara, divinely dark and alluring three-piece Duchess and noise-rockers Ballpeen. A 10/10 night guaranteed!

The Rookery: Jam Day & Showcase Gig: Agbeko / Ponyland / Picnic
Location: The Cluny Newcastle
Another of the Rookery’s full day sessions is taking place at The Cluny, starting with an open jam session welcoming all skill levels and genres at noon. Followed by an evening of live music from feel-good funk-pop darlings Picnic plus Reggae / Afro-beat mega-bands Ponyland and Agbeko.

Indigo Velvet / The Pasolas / Mayfare

Location: Surf Café Tynemouth 
Off Axis and Pillar Artists bring us tropical-pop four-piece Indigo Velvet from Edinburgh plus more summer vibes from beach-blues quartet The Pasolas and the brilliantly infectious indie-pop outfit Mayfare.

Wednesday 20th February
Thieves of Liberty / Chain the Phoenix / LUPA / Your Graduation

The super-charged Thieves of Liberty are headlining this belter of a show and are set to impress with their bluesy rock 'n' roll sound that is brimming with powerful vocals and massive guitar riffs. This is a band that’s really been honing their skills on a live stage, and it shows in their highly polished show that is guaranteed to have you rocking along. Alongside them there is some even more energetic girl power on the cards as our favourite fun-filled punk-pop darlings Chain The Phoenix join the fray alongside electro-rock outfit LUPA from Sheffield, right after Durham pop-punk outfit Your Graduation open the night on a high! A mighty night of epic rock!

Into The Deep / Blood Sport / Plastic Thieves

Having blown us away at their recent pre-Christmas gig supporting Thieves of Liberty, we are more than hyped to see Into The Deep give us their whole dose of fun-filled alt-rock that holds nothing back. These four lads from Newcastle are brimming with confidence and their only mission is to deliver a night of top notch tunes and witty banter that will have you singing along with a big smile on your face. Their brand new single ‘Animal’ is out now so make sure you check it out before heading down early to catch performances from the promising heavy rock youngsters Blood Sport and plenty of huge riffs and impressive vocal hijinks from trio Plastic Thieves. An absolutely killer line-up, perfect if you want to catch some of Newcastle’s finest rockers. 

Monday 25th February
Pylons / Sauvage / Worry Party

Pillar Artists present this magical night of epic guitar-laden soundscapes and goose-bump inducing vocals. Headed up by 5-piece dream-pop outfit, The Pylons from Lincoln, who have just put out a stunning double-pack single in the form of ‘Float Away’ / ‘Remember Me’ – two subtly glimmering tracks full of chilled vibes and raw emotion. Also on the line-up are one of our favourite local music wonderland creators Sauvage. This foursome create a rollercoaster of sounds and melodies that take you on a wonderful journey of brimming guitars and powerful, emotionally charged vocals leaving you longing for more. Also adding to the magic of the night are Worry Party who create complex music with their subtle use of guitars and keys layered with many other influences.

Demob Happy + Support

Still reeling from Demob Happy’s incredible 2nd album ‘Holy Doom’ released last year, the groovy psych-rockers are out for another UK wide tour, because why not when you’re such an intensely brilliant live band! Armed with new tracks such as their latest single ‘Less Is More’ we expect another belter night full of fuzzy riffs and high tempo drum beats to get the blood pumping for a midweek treat. With a devoted Newcastle following thanks to roots in the North East, we expect things to get pretty steamy in the cozy Northumbria Institute 2.

Wednesday 27th February
Polo / Honey Bee / Portraits
Location: The Cluny 2 Newcastle
Stunning female-fronted synth-pop trio Polo from Leeds return to Newcastle as part of their current tour to celebrate the release of some brand new music.
Full of soulful vocals and groove-filled sound,s these guys will have you moving and dreaming in equal measures. Support comes from local indie-pop outfit Honey Bee and soulful jazz-rock outfit Portraits.

Thursday 28th February
The Pale White + Support

The Pale White are a band that needs no introduction, and they’re quickly reaching ever more staggering heights on their climb to the top. Tipped as one of the UKs hottest emerging guitar bands, this Newcastle trio are an absolute rock-banger factory ready to take their energetic live show back on the road following their incredible sell-out Newcastle show in December. As they work their way through the country there will be only be one chance to see the lads in the North East when they stop by the mighty Georgian Theatre in Stockton. Bass Drum Of Death
Location: Think Tank – Newcastle
Living up to their name, this New York City garage punk outfit headed up by elusive mastermind John Barrett deliver a killer rock beat that twists and turns at every corner. Having just released a long awaited brand new EP called ‘Just Business’, swiftly followed by a US tour, this is a rare chance to catch these guys in the UK so don’t miss it!
