Single Review: 'Hold' by Paige Temperley
‘Hold’ is the new summer single from Newcastle singer songwriter and Tall Shaves front-woman Paige Temperley.
It is a more chilled offering following her collaboration with Elli Ioannou on ‘Twenty-Something Dreams’ earlier in the year.
Paige’s usual folk sound has been dialed back here; the strings laid aside in favour of the keys to create a tune that is both intimate and catchy with its repeated piano refrain, picking up in the middle as the percussion comes in.
Paige’s distinctive voice lifts the track, giving it a warm quality that embraces you with its emotional heft.
Fans of Laura Aquilina and early Gabrielle Aplin will find much to like here, and there are shades of Paige’s own influences in Norah Jones and Corinne Bailey Rae layered within ‘Hold’ too.
It is a versatile track that scrubs up well as a relaxed tune for summer evenings, but also has potential for one of those inspiring sports montages you see so much these days.
Also, having attended seven weddings in the space of eighteen months, I know a potential first dance song when I hear one.
Paige is also a huge advocate of greater representation in the North East music scene and she also leads from the front, being a regular presence in many city centre haunts, both on her own and with Tall Shaves.
‘Hold’ is available to stream on Spotify and Apple Music and you can catch up with Paige’s latest news on her Facebook page.
